General Bipin Rawat took over as the country's first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) with the promise of better coordination between the three armies. General Bipin Rawat has been an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington and the National Defence College, the High Command. He has studied Command and General Staff from Fort Leeuwenworth, USA.

During his long career in the army, General Rawat has led a battalion of the army along the Line of Actual Control in the eastern sector of the Army and also in Kashmir and the North East. General Rawat has also commanded a brigade of armies of various countries in the Republic of Congo. He has experience in conducting several military operations in the Western Command of the Army. He had served as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff before being appointed Chief of Army Staff.
General Rawat has been awarded many gallantry and distinguished service medals for his outstanding services based on his experience of more than 41 years of service in the Army.
